Obituary for Sheila Asseo

Sheila, 79, died unexpectedly at her home in Montecito on March 11, 2019. She was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the youngest of ten children. At 12, she immigrated with her family to Hammond, Indiana. A graduate of Hammond High, she worked at Inland Steel where, in June 1960, she met Lee. In December, they married. Fifty eight years later, that whirlwind romance qualifies as a lifelong love affair. Their horizons expanded when a job transfer led them to Western Massachusetts, where they lived for 20 years and raised their 3 children, before moving to Santa Barbara, California, in 1990.

Sheila will be remembered for her glamorous beauty & style, intellectual curiosity and infinite generosity. A style maven from the youngest age, she wore clothes beautifully and as time went on, layered in the most incredible jewels and hats. She was a voracious reader, avid crossword puzzler, and lifelong learner, seeking knowledge on a daily basis. As the youngest of her ten siblings, she became the unlikely family matriarch because of her contagious enthusiasm and sharp wit. She made everyone feel her equal, welcomed them warmly and showered all with her amazing energy and zest for life.

She is survived by her husband, Lee, children Meg (Doug) Hart, Rebecca Sheehan, and Kevin (Judy) Asseo, and 4 grandchildren, April Hart, Sean Hart, Jane Sheehan, and Moya Sheehan, and 2 sisters, Jean Burns and Eileen Schuster. There will be no local services. Please contribute to a charity of your choice in her memory.
